A Quick Hello And Introduction
Concept Art by Vicky Chen

Hi! My name's Alex, I'm writing comics and at least once a month I'll post something on here about that.

What kind of comics are you writing?

I've got two live projects right now: 'Tumult' and 'PuddleJumpers'. And they're quite different from one another.

PuddleJumpers

Puddlejumpers is a bright-eyed look at the communities that form after massive sea-level rise. Seen through the eyes of the pilots that connect these communities together. Airplanes! Dashing pilots! Solar-Punk!

To give you a little taste, here's some of the early concept art for a one-shot vibe-setter that is in the process of being drawn by the fantastic Vicky Chen. You can see some of Vicky's early concept work below and I've got plenty more to share and talk about in future posts.

I love getting concept art in the mail, the experience of collaborating with someone like this is something I've always aspired to but only recently found the means and discipline to make a reality. I anticipate a lot of what I write about here will be the experience of finding, reaching out to, and working with other people to make these projects a reality. I love it. The thrill of offering your work to someone comes with a jolt of connection, understanding, sometimes even epiphany. It's been surprising, and massively rewarding.

Beyond this one-shot I'm working on a longer series that develops these characters, introduces more, and expand on the world substantially, but also sustainably. I want this to be a project that ticks over and actually releases things, because if I've learned anything from my other creative endeavours, it's that the positive feedback of putting something into the world does wonders for keeping the my creative lights on.

That said, what writer worth their salt doesn't have an absolutely massive manuscript that they're not sure what to do with in their drawer. Which brings me to...

Tumult

Tumult is set in a city where good luck falls with the rain and a revolution is about to break out over its unfair distribution. Intrigue, mystery, and a cat-and-mouse game through a rain-soaked city.

While it doesn't have any associated concept art at the moment, Tumult actually is in a much more complete state because it was originally drafted as a novel and I am in the process of converting 80,000+ words of draft into who knows how many panels. Which will be...Fun? Challenging? Overwhelming? Regardless, making the decision to convert it to a comic has brought with it some much appreciated energy. It's a setting and a concept that I've put a lot of work into so I'm looking forward to sharing more about the conversion process and what I learn along the way.

Right. That'll do for a hey and howdy post. Expect more from me in the coming weeks as Vicky and I continue to work on the one-shot. I hope you like what you've seen so far and am looking forward to sharing more as we go!

Alex.
